  Gateway is the first solo album by Chromatics founding member, songwriter, and guitarist Adam Miller. Recorded at Adam’s Los Angeles home studio before and during the demise of Chromatics, and mixed by Chris Coady (Beach House, Slowdive), it is an intimate album of 18 meditational pieces intended to sit at the “gateway” between dream and reality.
  
  Steeped in the traditions of the great six-string, impressionist tone poets like Durutti Column, Deebank-era Felt, and early Cure, the music flows through the lens of Adam’s cinematic, neo-psychedelic, coldwave guitar style. The listener is asked to focus not only upon the notes, but also the space that exists between them. Gateway is about the pursuit for calm in the physical realm.
  
  As Adam explains, most of the tracks on Gateway were originally written as meditations. “When I’m in a good workflow, I usually start my day off by just picking up a guitar, zoning out, and recording whatever is passing through the quantum field at the time. It’s a visceral process. I’m not even really paying attention to what I’m doing as I’m recording. I’m usually at my purest creatively at the very beginning of the day, and over the years, I’ve recorded whatever happens in the moment and then organized that material into a library that I’ve continued to draw from,” says Adam.
  
  The album’s ominous lead track “Lost Guitar” opens the door to the regal, parapet post punk of “The Lucky Star,” inspired by the William T. Vollmann novel of the same title. While Gateway is an instrumental album, the lyrical touches are apparent to those who pay attention. It is a story that can be told without words. Vollmann’s novel was one of the first books Adam read at the beginning of the 2020 lockdown. The dream sequences, themes of vulnerability and mysticism highlighted in the book, are recurring influences on Gateway.
  
  Elegiac, ethereal tracks like “Glimmerlight,” “Erosion,” and “Night Bloom” would not be out of place on a classic Krautrock album or in a darkly somber European melodrama. Plangent pieces of rainy-day tape experiments Adam made years ago while living in Portland, Oregon appear and then disappear as quickly as they surface, giving the music an exposed, almost diary-like quality.
  
  Amidst the drifts of darkness on Gateway, there is a recurring theme of hope. The album concludes with the open-hearted optimism of “Alien Summer,” with eyes fixed towards future horizons, but with a sense of humility reflecting the scars sustained along the journey.
